A fire at the American Plaza Motel on Dundas Street East early morning left two people injured and caused an estimated $80,000 in damage.
Firefighters responded shortly after 5:00 AM after multiple 911 calls reported flames at the motel. Crews managed to contain the fire to a single unit.
“We got a call shortly after 5:00 AM this morning, multiple 911 calls that there was a fire at this location,” said Fire Chief Jamie Britton.
Two people suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. Officials say they are now in stable condition.
A neighbor who witnessed the fire praised the quick response from emergency crews.
“The fire didn’t last very long. I’m really pleased with how fast the fire trucks got here,” he said. “I know two people went to the hospital, but they’re in stable condition.”
He also said bystanders stepped in to help one of the victims escape the burning unit.
“There were some people who helped the guy out of the room. He needed help, or we would’ve lost him for sure,” he added.
The Ontario Fire Marshal investigated the cause of the fire.
