Members of the London community came together this week for the Our London Family Memorial Walk, marking four years since the tragic attack that took the lives of four members of the Afzaal family in 2021.
The event wasn’t just about remembering it was about learning, reflecting, and committing to action.
Participants walked together through the park, stopping at three stations. Each station provided an opportunity to learn more about the Afzaal family’s story, share personal reflections, and participate in a community pledge to stand against Islamophobia.
Faith leader Abed Al Fattah Twakkal, who spoke during the memorial, said hate is often rooted in arrogance and ignorance when people see themselves as better than others and fail to understand those who are different.
“It starts when people see others as less than human,” Twakkal said. “That’s when injustice begins not just physical harm, but also harmful speech and attitudes.”
The walk included activities like ribbon ceremonies and a shared pledge, where attendees committed to building a safer, more inclusive London.
“We have to do our part,” Twakkal added. “We keep working, and we never give up that’s how we create change.”
Organizers emphasized that this free, accessible event was open to all. More than a memorial, it was a community call to action to not only mourn the loss of Our London Family, but to take meaningful steps against hate in all its forms.
