LONDON, Ont. — The Thames Valley District School Board’s Special Olympics began Tuesday at Western Alumni Stadium, drawing an enthusiastic crowd.
“It’s one of the two best days in the Valley,” said an organizer. “We’re celebrating inclusion, diversity and accessibility across the valley — and smiles on everybody’s faces, right?”
Teachers from J.P. Roberts Public School called the event one of their favourite times of the year.
“We’re super happy to be here,” said one teacher. “I’m a teacher, so we have students here. This is our third year attending, and we really enjoy it. The athletes love it and have a really good time.”
One of those athletes, Grayson, had a full day of softball, track and relay events. When asked if he was fast, he shouted an enthusiastic “Yes!”
Superintendent of special education Jeff Bruce credited the hundreds of volunteers with helping make the day a success.
“It’s an opportunity for our students with special education needs to shine,” he said. “It’s a chance for them to be involved in athletic activities. The focus is on them — to celebrate them — and I think that’s why it’s such a fantastic day. It’s one we look forward to every year.”
Bruce said the turnout was strong and the event ran smoothly.
“We’ve had a great response. Everyone’s arrived and we’re thrilled to have the students out there on the Western facilities, competing,” he said.
The event welcomed 86 schools, 560 student athletes, 605 peer helpers and 161 volunteers — all coming together to highlight the meaning of sports: support, inclusion and teamwork.
The Special Olympics continue June 11 at Western Alumni Stadium for secondary school athletes.
