A heat warning is in effect for London and Middlesex County this weekend, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 31°C or higher and overnight lows staying above 20°C. Health officials say the extreme heat can pose serious risks, especially to seniors, young children, and people without air conditioning.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding everyone to stay cool, drink plenty of water, and check on neighbors and loved ones who may need assistance.
“Some people are more likely to get sick from the heat,” said Dr. Joanne Kearon, Associate Medical Officer of Health. “That includes the elderly, young kids, people who don’t have air conditioning, and those with certain health conditions or medications.”
Signs of heat-related illness include heavy sweating, dizziness, and feeling sick or confused. In serious cases, heat stroke can happen and may require emergency care.
If you don’t have air conditioning, the health unit recommends visiting cooling centers, libraries, or shopping malls during the hottest part of the day. Several community centers are also open, including East Lions, South London, North London Optimist, and StarTech.com Community Centre.
Another major concern is parked cars. “Cars heat up very fast and can become deadly in minutes,” Dr. Kearon said. “Never leave a child or pet inside, even for a short time.”
People are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, wear light clothing, and keep window blinds closed to block the sun.
The heat warning is expected to remain in place through Sunday. Officials say they’ll keep monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed.
