City council’s Infrastructure and Corporate Services Committee voted to support a series of long-awaited road upgrades that will improve traffic flow and make way for growth at London’s north and southwest corners.
One of the most important approvals Wednesday was the expansion of Southdale Road West, between Bostwick Road and Colonel Talbot Road. The project will begin in 2028, pending additional public consultations.
“Great news,” said Ward 10 Councillor Paul Van Meerbergen. “It is a day of freedom for transit riders in the southwest. This is a great, progressive move in the direction of transportation freedom.”
Ward 9 Councillor Anna Hopkins echoed that enthusiasm but cautioned that the work is still years away. “There’s great interest in the community,” she said. “We still have to figure out how it’s all going to work, but I’m glad public engagement is part of the process moving forward.”
Meanwhile, on the city’s north side, council also advanced the widening of Sunningdale Road West from Wonderland Road to Village Walk Boulevard. That project is scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and be finished by 2028.
“It’s wonderful to see the work being done,” said Ward 7 Coun. Corrine Rahman. “This corridor has been targeted for improvements as far back as 2013. There has already been a lot of intensification in the area, and more yet to come.”
Rahman cited upcoming developments at Richmond and Sunningdale and a new subdivision near Wonderland will bring traffic demands.
“We understand this will be tough on residents during construction, but I appreciate the work being done to make it as smooth as possible,” she said.
All of the motions on the agenda pertaining to roads were passed unanimously in a 6-0 vote.
