The Elgin OPP has wrapped up Operation Safe Driver Week, focusing on unsafe driving habits among both commercial and non-commercial drivers.
From July 13th to 19th, the campaign targeted behaviours like speeding, distracted driving, improper lane changes, and following too closely.
Officers laid at least 15 charges specifically against commercial drivers, including speeding, using hand-held devices, and not wearing seatbelts.
There were 161 provincial offences for which charges were issued across highways in the Elgin and Chatham-Kent areas.
In a press release, the OPP says
about 20 percent of fatal crashes on OPP-patrolled roads last year involved commercial vehicles.
Staff Sergeant Ian George says initiatives like this are key to saving lives on our roads, and that working together can make a real difference.
