Ontario Premier Doug Ford has controversy surrounding speed cameras across Ontario, stating this week that they are “nothing but a tax grab” and calling for them to be removed across the province. “If you want to slow traffic down at school, you put the big huge signs, big flashing lights, crossing area, people will slow down,” Ford stated on Tuesday.
Reaction within London has been divided. Samy, a student at Fanshawe College, stated that cameras could be useful in some areas. “Maybe around schools, speed cameras would be fine, so it can prevent, you know, putting children’s lives in jeopardy,” he added. Outside of schools, however, Sammy explained, “it can be 50-50, depending on the circumstances.”
Jonathan, an employee at a convenience store, expressed that ambivalence. “They would be useful in issuing a lot of tickets, that’s for sure,” he said. “I’m neutral on that because I personally haven’t had a lot of speeding issues myself, but I can understand why some locations would want them.”
While governments promote other measures such as flashing signs, cities such as London have recognized speed cameras as a way of addressing unsafe driving.
