Beloved Canadian author, Robert Munsch, has been approved for medical assistance in dying (MAID).
In an article published by the New York Times, Munsch said he applied for MAID after his dementia diagnosis in 2021.
The Canadian law requires that patients actively consent to MAID at the time of their death and so a date has yet to be set.
Munsch said his decision came after watching one of his brothers suffer from Lou Gehrig’s disease, and realized he did not wish to share a similar fate.
Munsch was known for writing children’s books that captured the hearts of children and parents.
The book “Love You Forever,” was the bestselling children’s book in Canada for three consecutive years and highlighted the unconditional love between a mother and her son throughout the years
Robert Munsch was honoured with the Order of Canada and a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, as well as being the most stolen from author at the Toronto Public library.
“The Perfect Paper Airplane,” written many years ago, is set to be published this fall as one of his final books.
