The premier held a confrence in Vaughn to discuss the future of automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras in municipalities.
The premier said in a press conference that municipalities are using these cameras as a cash grab. Ford stated that “cameras do not slow people down” and other traffic speed measures like flashing signs, raised crosswalks and roundabouts are needed to prevent speeding in the first place.
Premier Ford also presented a fund for effected municipalities to change speed cameras to other road measures that slow people down.
When asked why not just change the laws around the cameras, ford said the ban to cameras is to be “proactive instead of reactive” to actually slow them down rather than let them speed through.
When the premier was asked about his own government introducing cameras in 2019, Ford said the cameras have gotten out of control.
Legislation is to be introduced for the municipal speed camera ban in a few weeks.
