It’s a sound that can save lives.
“Test Your Smoke Alarm Day” is on September 28, and London Fire is jumping in on the campaign, encouraging locals to ensure their smoke alarms are working.
The campaign cleverly titled “Saved by the Beep” is being promoted by fire departments across Ontario, and London Fire has started to roll out posts regarding the campaign.
In a recent post to various social media platforms, London Fire teamed up with London Knights forward Logan Hawrey in an effort to raise awareness for the campaign.
“What we’ve noticed over several years… within the City of London is that smoke alarms continue to be not maintained,” said Matt Hepditch, Deputy Chief with London Fire.
Hepditch continued by warning students that alarms are not forever, as they also expire too.
“Smoke alarms on the inside will have a date of manufacture, and the expiry date is ten years after that. It’s very important that if you’ve seen a smoke alarm in your rental that is expired… under the Ontario Fire Code you are required to notify the owner.”
Ontario law requires every home to have functional smoke alarms, which is another key point in the campaign.
You can test your smoke alarm in a matter of seconds, by pressing the test button and listening for the beep.
London Fire recommends to check your smoke alarms at least once every month.
Those who wish to join this campaign can take the pledge here, to receive monthly notifications for smoke alarm tests.
