Another step has been made in Ontario’s plans to develop the Ring of Fire region. Webequie First Nation is receiving nearly $40 million as part of a partnership agreement.
“The Webequie Supply Road is more than a road — it’s a pathway to opportunity, access and growth on our terms,” said Webequie Chief Cornelius Wabasse at a conference announcing the news.
Under the agreement, a final Environmental Assessment for the road is to be submitted by January next year. The province then plans to start construction in June. The funds will also be allocated towards enhancing infrastructure and supports for the Webequie community. These include mental health supports as well as the construction of an indoor recreational facility.
The Northern Ontario area contains many of the minerals used in the manufacturing of tech products like phones and EV batteries. Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation, says:
“We are writing the next important chapter of First Nations economic reconciliation by investing in infrastructure, essential services and road access to legacy projects like the Ring of Fire. In partnership, we are positioning Ontario as the global leader in sustainable mineral development and an economic powerhouse.”
Ontario states that ongoing discussions will take place to ensure both parties can build and maintain the road. Another agreement has already been made between the province and the Aroland First Nation.
