The Salthaven Rehabilitation and Education Center from Strathroy made their way to Fanshawe to teach students about the intelligence of animals and give some fun facts along the way as well.
The main focus was to teach students that animals are a lot smarter than they may think. Salthaven went on to tell stories of experiences they had while working with animals like geese following their crew 3 blocks down the road to see their baby goslings.
“we’re just trying to encourage more students to come out and learn a little bit about the nature around London, we want to find creative ways to help students learn about biology relates to everyday life.” Says Kari Moreland, Organizer of the event and Professor at Fanshawe.
Brittany leach who’s been working at Salthaven for more than 10 years says “We do two different things, we do wildlife education as well as wildlife rehabilitation. Which basically means we’re trying to spread the word of conservation at large in the community.”
The event took place in Fanshawe’s Innovation Village and was open to the public. Students from all types of programs showed up to learn about wildlife.
Salthaven brought in two animals for demonstration, that being Gus the Black Rat Snake and Chaukar the Falcon. Leach brought them around the room for
everyone to get a closer look at the animals without touching them.
Students who attended the event said they learned so much information about wildlife and what it means to take care of animals. Students said they learned that “snakes don’t stop growing like humans do” some were even surprised at how old Chaukar was. Chaukar is 21-years old and a student says “That bird is older than I am!”
Salthaven closed the event by saying that if you want to learn more about wildlife and animal care, you can visit their website.
