A Snow Squall Warning remains in effect for London, Parkhill, and Eastern Middlesex County, with hazardous conditions and up to 30 centimetres of snow possible by Tuesday morning.
Environment Canada says shifting winds from the northwest will bring the heaviest snow into the London area tonight.
“It is expected to shift starting late this afternoon and this evening,” Says meteorologist Geoff Coulson. “Right now, the winds are mostly from the north, and the strongest lake effect snow activity is falling to the west of London.”
Coulson also says snowfall rates of 5 to 10 centimetres per hour are possible.
The City of London says it’s ready to respond as soon as conditions worsen.
“London’s been prepared for a while,” said Joel Gillard, division manager for road operations in the City of London. “A few months back, we started bringing in our salt resources and liquid brine materials, as well as getting our equipment and staff ready for winter operations.”
He says plow and salting crews will focus first on main roads and bus routes.
Both Environment Canada and city officials are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel during the snow squalls.
This is what we can expect:
- Snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm.
- Localized amounts exceeding 50 cm are possible.
- Peak snowfall rates of 5 to 10 cm per hour.
- Very poor visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow.
Environment Canada and the City of London road operations will continue to monitor conditions overnight.
