A local non profit is running a campaign to buy, and protect natural lands. The campaign has a $10 million goal and they are more than halfway there.
The Thames Talbot Land Trust are working hard on their ‘Nature Nearby’ campaign. The main goal of the campaign is to protect 1,500 acres of forest, grassland, wetland, and even agricultural land.
Executive Director of the TTLT Daria Koscinski says the long term plans for the land is “To protect the lands forever. So we have a number of ways that we try to ensure that is possible. And that’s including setting aside funding for long term protection and care of those lands.”
Some of the nature preserves they are looking to save are in London and the surrounding areas such as Middlesex, Oxford, Perth, and Elgin.
This is the TTLT’s largest campaign since it was founded in the year 2000. They are currently protecting 29 nature reserves with locations all around southwestern Ontario.
Koscinski mentions one of their most recent ones was “Hawk Cliff Wood, which is just outside of Port Stanley. That one has over 300 acres which are now protected. It is also a Hawk watch site as well as a Monarch butterfly migration route”
Back when they opened up the organization they did not actually protect any land, they were just an organization looking to do conservation projects with the Meadowlily nature preserve being their first project in the year 2002.
The TTLT have raised $6.5 million out of their $10 million goal.
To donate to the campaign you can find it on the TTLT website.
