Swedish aerospace giant Saab is reportedly in talks with the Canadian government and Bombardier to build its Gripen fighter jets under license in Canada, a move that could create up to 10,000 jobs, according to CEO Micael Johansson.
Saab’s interest in a Canadian production hub comes with rising demand linked to Ukraine, with Johansson saying discussions are underway to expand manufacturing capacity.
Canada’s Industry Minister, Mélanie Joly, welcomed the plan, stressing that Canada has a strong aerospace sector and now is the time for deeper industrial partnership.
The deal could mark a major boost for Canada’s aerospace industry, both for domestic capability and in terms of meeting export demand.
