The Salvation Army in London says it’s expecting a busier holiday season as more families register for programs for support. With rising food and housing costs, more than 2,500 applications for Christmas assistance have already been submitted. The organization expects to help about 3,500 households in the city this year.
The annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is the Salvation Army’s largest fundraiser and supports families who need help with food, toys and basic essentials. This year’s goal is $650,000, money that will fund both Christmas programs and year-round community services.
Nancy Kerr, executive director of Salvation Army London Community Services, says many of the people reaching out for support have not needed assistance in recent years. She says the rising cost of living continues to push households into difficult financial situations.
“Groceries are more expensive, rent is higher, and people are deciding how they will provide for their kids when they cannot even cover basic bills,” Kerr said. “We are hearing from people who never expected to be in this situation.”
About half of the money raised will go toward the Christmas Assistance Program, which provides families with food for a holiday meal and toys for children. The remaining funds help operate ongoing services, including community meals, support programs for seniors and food initiatives in local schools.
Kerr says around 1,500 people rely on the Salvation Army’s community meal programs each month, and the need has continued to grow throughout the year.
The kettle campaign also relies heavily on volunteers. Kettles are set up at 45 locations across London, but many volunteer shifts are still open. Kerr says a single two-hour shift can make a meaningful difference, especially as demand increases, leading into the holidays.
She says every donation helps support families facing hardship this season. You can donate in person, use tap-to-give terminals or sign up to volunteer through londonchristmaskettles.ca.
