The federal government has introduced a new colour-coded weather alert system.
Instead of stating the hazard and alert type, alerts will now be assigned a colour based on severity level.
Yellow alerts are the mildest of the colours, assigned to short term, moderate conditions that may cause slight damage, disruption, or health impacts.
Moving up in the scale, orange alerts are assigned to severe, widespread weather conditions likely to cause significant damages.
At the top of the scale are red alerts, assigned to dangerous and potentially life threatening weather with the ability to cause prolonged damage and disruption.

Environment Canada says the new system aims to modernize the public weather program.
London was assigned its first colour based alert, as a Yellow Watch – Snow Squall has been issued for the city. Conditions could last until Friday.
