Ravi Jain, the founder and artistic director of Toronto’s very own ‘Why Not Theatre’ wins the Siminovitch Prize; Canada’s most prestigious honour in the world of theatre.
The $100,000 award, presented annually to a Canadian director, playwright, or designer, recognizes mid-career artists who have demonstrated outstanding creativity, innovation, and leadership in Canadian theatre.
Jain was praised by the jury for his bold vision and commitment to building inclusive spaces that challenge traditional boundaries of performance.
Evidently through his work such as ‘Prince Hamlet’, a bilingual ASL/English reimagining of Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy and the two-part ‘Mahabharata’, a stage interpretation of the 4,000-year-old Sanskrit epic, Jain has consistently centred inclusion and innovation at the heart of his practice.
Jain selected co-creator of Mahabharata Miriam Fernandes as his protege, who will receive $25,000 to support her own creative development.
