Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, who says she made a “mistake” voting for the federal budget, pledges it won’t happen again.
She said she supported the budget based on assurances that no new subsidies for oil industry carbon projects would be included.
May says she was informed by officials associated with Mark Carney and the then minister Steven Guilbeault that the budget would not extend tax credits to enhanced oil recovery.
She says those commitments were broken when Ottawa later signed a deal with Alberta expanding incentives for large scale carbon capture projects.
The Green leader called the move a “significant betrayal” that undermines Canada’s climate commitments and her trust in the assurances she was given.
May says she acted in good faith at the time, but the experience has changed her approach.
She says she will not support a federal budget under similar circumstances again.
