A newly opened Middle Eastern restaurant located at 312 Commissioners Rd is drawing crowds in London, with long lineups and a lively atmosphere filling the space from morning to night.
Makan Restaurant and Lounge was born out of an idea shared between manager Muath Alsatary and his two friends, who wanted to bring something different to the city’s food scene.
Their goal was to create a place with good vibes, thoughtful design, and food made with care.
For Alsatary, the restaurant is more than a business. “It’s my home,” he said. “I really care about this place.” He added that Makan was meant to be a space where Middle Eastern communities could gather, while also welcoming people from all backgrounds.
The name “Makan,” meaning “place” in Arabic, was chosen by Alsatary himself.
Staff say working at Makan feels just as welcoming as eating there. Shady Al Rawas, one of the staff members, described it as a second family and friendly environment to work in. “The staff are amazing, and we all support each other.”
Popular dishes include the mixed grill and lamb mandi, which are frequently ordered.
For many diners, the experience goes beyond the food.
“I’m having super fun. The food is delicious, I’m enjoying everything, the lighting, and the music make it even more fun,” one diner said.
Looking ahead, Alsatary said he hopes to expand while keeping the qualities that make Makan special. He is already considering a second, larger location in north London.
