The third Monday of every January marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The American federal holiday commemorates and honours the life and impact made by the leader of the Civil Rights Movement.
While Americans get to kick back and relax, Canada and the world’s other nations still have to go about their day.
However, that doesn’t mean that Canadians aren’t paying attention to it.
On a London basis, Fanshawe College is doing their part to celebrate the legacy of the historical leader.
Treasurer of Fanshawe’s Black Students Club Ashley Williams, expressed how much the day means to her.
“It’s important to me because all black people come together to celebrate the milestones that he made for all of us… we are here today because of what he contributed”.
Williams is a big part of Fanshawe’s first black community that has left a major impact on the school.
The goal is for the club to remain successful beyond this year, and to make a huge impact with Fanshawe’s black population.
Media Coordinator of the Black Students Club Nathan Nlosso, has similar aspirations.
“We’re trying to make it a big thing all around Fanshawe. Not only a one year thing, but something that will last for generations and generations to come”.
Both Nlosso and Williams stated that Monday would be quiet in terms of celebration. The festivities include a gathering full of jokes, movies, and educational reflection.
The Black Students Club is hard at work, saving many big events for February which marks Black History Month.
The club has made it clear that although this is a day worth celebrating, bigger and better lies ahead.
