Canada is pushing back against the use of tariffs as political leverage following tensions tied to Greenland.
Speaking today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada opposes any trade measures being used to pressure allies, warning that tariffs risk escalating disputes that should be handled through diplomacy.
Carney’s comments follow threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on countries that resist his position on Greenland.
The prime minister also emphasized that Greenland’s future must be decided by its people and Denmark, not through economic punishment.
Canada has voiced clear support for Denmark and called for cooperation in the Arctic based on international rules. Carney said Ottawa will continue to work and find solutions with allies to promote stability and economic fairness.
