The Thames Valley District School Board and Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute are celebrating one of their former students going to the moon.
Jeremy Hansen is set to be the first ever Canadian to go to the moon. Born in London, Ontario, he later moved to Ingersoll and attended IDCI for high school. Hansen’s journey inspires 15 students a part of the school’s Artemis Explorers Club to help spread the word about Hansen and the mission.
ICDI prepared a picture of the students on a football field in the shape of the moon, and an ICDI keychain in hopes that Hansen will take a piece of his childhood into space.
“I’ve taught over 4000 students and Jeremy stood out,” says Cynthia Armstrong, a retired teacher who taught Hansen grade 12 math.
Armstrong cited Hansen’s interest in the military as something that stood out as she also came from a family with military backgrounds. After graduating from IDCI, Hansen attended the Royal Military College in Kingston.
“Jeremy stood out as being a gentleman, he was a focused young man and he knew where he wanted to go in life, and I think everything he did was leading up to that,” says Armstrong. Armstrong would organize assemblies for the school and Hansen would volunteer to help with setting up the lights and electronics.
IDCI are honouring an amazing role model by creating several displays around their school like a carefully crafted Lego replica of the Artemis Launch System, planning a launch countdown and a “Return to Earth” celebration including many more long-term projects honouring the Astronaut.
