The high-profile police probe into a slew of hazardous chemicals and firearms at a home near Western University is “not a national security investigation,” London police said, despite the scope of the probe expanding into Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec.
“This is not a terrorism investigation. This is not a national security investigation,” Bastien said. “There is no ongoing threat to public safety.” Said Deputy Chief Paul Bastien during a media briefing on Friday at London Police Headquarters.
This is nearly two weeks after four people were charged following the discovery of firearms and chemicals capable of making explosives at a residence on Chesham Place.
The investigation began because at midnight on Jan. 24, the main campus of Western University’s Special Constable Service received a report of a trespasser inside the Claudette McKay Lassonde Pavilion, an engineering building on campus.
Police said two men entered the building, leading to an arrest for breaking and entering.
As evidence was analyzed, investigators obtained additional search warrants for properties located in Ottawa and Quebec.
‘The expansion into those communities reflects the thoroughness and diligence of the officers conducting this investigation, not necessarily any new or heightened public danger.” Bastien said.
Police also confirmed that firearms-related charges stem from all three search locations.
Four adults have been charged in connection with the investigation, charges including unlawful possession of explosives and several firearms-related offences. All individuals involved are either current or former students of Western University,
“We partnered with the OPP and RCMP to ensure they are informed, engaged, and have the opportunity to provide their expertise,” Bastien added.
Police reiterated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety and that the continued police presence in the Chesham Place area reflects ongoing investigations.
“You will continue to see police presence as specialized examinations continue,” Bastien said. “That presence should be understood as investigative due diligence, not ongoing danger.” He said.
Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing. Updates will be provided as they become available.
