With spring coming up, the snow will start melting soon and we got a lot of it this year.
Numerous people in online forums for London have been concerned with how this will affect their property and if this will have any potential dangers regarding their neighbourhood.
Mary Ann from Climate Action London says that during winter, snow can block your downspouts causing a buildup of water.
It’s important to know that you should have your downspouts aimed in a direction where they won’t causing puddles or big bodies of water in your property, such as hard pavement or tarmat. “One thing that the city now enforces when you’re doing construction or renovations is to install something called a dry well. it’s a pit that would collect a lot of water from the downspout and it will slowly dissipate into the ground.”
She says that streets in London are built to allow water to flow freely into the grates in the road.
Come spring time, she says that a good way to avoid flooding is by having a lot of garden space on your lawn. Mary Ann says that having a lot of loose dirt and mulch in your garden is the best thing for a potential flood since all that water will get absorbed into the ground easily.
