For many students at Fanshawe College, starting college can feel overwhelming. Being in a new place, surrounded by new people and different cultures, can make some students feel out of place. The Black Students Club is working to change that by creating a welcoming space where students can connect and feel supported.
Daniel, the vice-president of the Black Students Club, says the club was created to bring people together and build community.
“Our mission is to bring Black people together, bring culture together, and support people of color,” he said. “But we’re open to everyone. We have students from many backgrounds, and everyone is welcome.”
The club was formed after students noticed there wasn’t an active group focused on Black student experiences.
“We heard that clubs existed before, but they didn’t last,” Daniel said. “So we decided to make our own, and it’s going really well so far.”
Throughout the year, the Black Students Club hosts a variety of events. These include meet-and-greets, movie nights, sip-and-paint events, career talks, and study sessions. Some events have attracted more than 70 students.
“People kept inviting their friends, and the room filled up fast,” Daniel said. “That showed us how much students needed a space like this.”
The club also supports students who may be struggling socially or culturally. Many students face challenges adjusting to accents, communication styles, or simply feeling like they belong.
“Some students don’t know how to explain it — they just feel out of place,” Daniel said. “The club gives them a safe space where they don’t have to question themselves.”
Guest speakers Scholarstica Asahchopare are often invited to talk about their experiences and encourage students to speak up and seek help when needed.
This year marks the club’s first time celebrating Black History Month. Events include guest speakers from different professions and a talent show that
highlights student creativity.
“We just want people to leave our events feeling welcome,” Daniel said. “Knowing they can come back and be themselves.”
