Violence has erupted in several regions of Mexico following reports that authorities took down an influential cartel leader, “El Mencho,” in a joint operation involving Mexican and U.S. officials.
According to multiple reports, the arrest triggered retaliatory actions from cartel members, including road blockades, vehicle fires, and armed confrontations. At the same time, the unrest was initially concentrated in the western state of Jalisco.
“I have a lot of family and friends in Quintana Roo, and it’s terrifying for them right now,” said Jerry Rozo, owner of Grill 23 Authentic Mexican in London, Ontario.
Reports of unrest have surfaced in areas typically known for tourism and calm conditions.
“My niece stayed home today. Everybody’s scared,” he said. “But my sister-in-law just texted saying that the government is stepping up now and starting to take control of the situation,” Rosso said.
Despite the violence, Rosso says he remains hopeful that the situation will stabilize quickly.
“Mexico is a beautiful country. The people are amazing,” he said. “I really hope this turns around quickly.”
Mexico remains one of the most popular international travel destinations for Canadians, with millions visiting each year.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
