Rising rent, food insecurity, and limited job opportunities are shaping student life across campus. In a new podcast interview, Harsh Rana, a candidate for Fanshawe Student Union (FSU) President, shared how his own struggles as an international student pushed him to step into student leadership.
Rana is currently studying software systems testing at Fanshawe College and has previously completed technical systems analysis. As a peer mentor and international digital ambassador, he has supported more than 50 students facing academic, financial, and personal challenges.
“When I first came to Canada, I faced homesickness, mental stress, and job issues,” Rana said. “Students were coming to me not just with study questions but with problems about housing, groceries, and acad
emic integrity.”
Affordability is at the centre of Rana’s platform. He said he has already arranged partnerships to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for $15 on weekends, compared to typical prices of $40 to $45. He also plans to introduce a 20 percent discount on supplements for students.
“Food is a basic need,” he said. “If students save money on groceries, they can focus better on their studies and their future.”
Rana also highlighted the need for improved mental health support, entry-level job opportunities, and extended late-night food options on campus. One proposal includes expanding $1 coffee access for students studying overnight.
“Nobody is talking about bus-pass refunds, affordable food, or entry-level jobs,” Rana said. “These are real problems students face every day.”
As voting approaches, Rana says his goal is simple: ensure every student feels heard.
“This is your college,” he said. “Your voice matters, and real change is possible.”
