Another band in Fanshawe’s Music Industry Arts (MIA) program is gaining momentum. Fresh off a weekend gig with two more ahead, showcasing the growing influence that the MIA talent have in the local music scene.
Wishbone, which has three MIA students, took centre stage at the London Brewing CO. Last weekend in an event organized by RN booking, part of the independent label Year6Record founded by another MIA student.
Fanshawe’s MIA program has long been one of the college’s most in-demand offerings, with the upcoming fall term already being waitlisted. The program continues to help aspiring artists, producers, and music professionals discover their path in the industry and gain so many valuable skills to pursue it.
But balancing performances and study can be tough.
“I will be living in the studios for the next week,” said Wishbone drummer Atilla. “It is a struggle.”
Wishbone guitarist Wyn, also mentions how often the band truly is working on music.
“When you’re a student in a band, the band feels like your entire life,” Wyn said.
With these challenges just impacting bands, what are the type of challenges others in the MIA program have? RN Bookings founder Xae DC, described some of the challenges he has been having as a record label owner.
“The biggest challenge I have is really just sleeping, I do my school work and I can break my day up into so many different parts. If I had a full 24 hours to make my days out of then I’d be fine, but the main thing is just trying to find time to sleep and wake up.”
In terms of running a record label, Xae mentioned that prior to dividing the workload amongst members, his role as a founder made it stressful as he oversaw many key aspects.
“The biggest thing I did that helped me balance everything was talking to everyone and say I am not the only person you can go to, you can go to all these other people for other things and that really took a lot off my plate so that I can focus on what I need to do.”
Wishbone’s upcoming shows are set to be on March 5 and 12 at Poacher’s Arms in London.
