A fire that started with an “electrical issue” at a high-end Wortley Road condo building forced residents out into the cold Monday morning while firefighters worked to put it out.
The blaze occurred just down the block from the Black Walnut café, which just reopened, three years after a fire destroyed it’s original building.
Firefighters received the call for Monday’s fire at 122 Wortley Road around 7:30 a.m.
On the scene, they had to make some unique choices due to where it was burning in the building.
“There was some water migration throughout the ceiling area where we had to put the fire out. And we did a really good job of trying to mitigate it and keep it to only a couple of units,” said Gary Mosburger, a platoon chief with the London Fire Department.
“We actually pulled a toilet off the floor and started to move the water towards the pipe just to allow for natural evacuation of that water,” he said.
The fire burned between the roof of the building first level and the floor in the second level.
Mosburger told XFM that an electrical issue was the cause of the fire.
Firefighters didn’t know how it started yet, but were looking at some newer low-voltage wiring in the building.
The building has now been handed back to the property owner, who will be responsible for the building’s cleanup.
While paramedics were on scene with fire crews, no injuries were reported.
