As construction crews finish building bus shelters on Highbury Avenue, the final period of construction on a major transit project will begin later this month.
This is the last of five phases of work apart of the East London Link rapid transit project to improve transit service from downtown to Fanshawe College.
The city said that phase five of the project, which begins mid-March, includes an overhaul of Dundas Street between Highbury and McCormick Boulevard to build a centre median and to add shoulder bus lanes.
Because the construction is being completed in a busy corridor, work is being done in stages.
- Stage one: Dundas between Highbury and McCormick, including work on Ashland Avenue.
- Stage two: Southbound lanes of Highbury between King Street and Dundas.
- Stage three: Northbound lanes of Highbury between King and Dundas, with the stretch of Dundas between Highbury and Florence included.
The city said because of lane restrictions that will be put in place, transit routes may be affected.
London Transit has begun posting bus stop closures and detour notices both online and on bus stop posts.
Transit rider Jamie Bravo said she deals with fibromyalgia, making it harder for her to walk. Combined with changes to bus stops, she said it makes travelling difficult.

“You know, we don’t know where to go,” Bravo said.
“They very vaguely tell you where to go. The signs are sometimes ripped down. Sometimes the signs aren’t even correct. Timings are off. It’s just too much.”
As a result of construction, service interruptions, along with sidewalk and lane closures may happen, the city said.
Access to businesses will still be available during construction, which is expected to last until 2028.
