International Francophonie Day is celebrated annually on March 20.
It honors the French language, cultural diversity, and the values of solidarity, democracy, and peace.
Ontario has the second largest French-speaking (Francophone) population in Canada.
“With more than 650,000 Francophones who play a critical role in our province’s culture and economic strength,” said in a statement by Caroline Mulroney, the Minister of Francophone Affairs.
“As part of our plan to protect Ontario and support our Francophone community, our government is increasing access to French-language services and supports for businesses to help them grow and succeed for years to come.”
One of the government service is Ombudsman Ontario and they have a dedicated team to help protect the right to use French to communicate and receive services.
Ontario celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag last fall.
Mulroney also said the government will continue to invest in projects that capitalize on the unique strengths of the Francophone community, today and for future generations.
“To all those celebrating the contributions of Francophone communities in Ontario and around the world, Happy International Francophonie Day!” – Mulroney
