Fanshawe College hosted its year-end Indigenous gathering, bringing students, staff, and members of the wider community together to celebrate culture, connection, and student achievement.
The event featured a variety of traditional powwow dances, including fancy shawl, jingle, and traditional
styles, along with drumming, singing, food, and Indigenous artisans showcasing handmade crafts. The gathering created a welcoming and inclusive space for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous attendees to learn about culture and take part in the celebration.
“This is a day for our Fanshawe students and our community to come together and celebrate culture and also celebrate our Indigenous students’ achievements,” said Casey McDonald, Indigenous Transition and Learning Advisor at Fanshawe College. “We invite Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, staff, and local communities. It’s a great way to learn about our culture and be involved.”
Organizers say the event is also about encouraging people from all backgrounds to participate and learn.
“We always encourage non-Indigenous folks to come and check it out and learn more about Indigenous culture,” McDonald added.
Kristen Longdo, Indigenous Strategic Learning Guide, says the gathering is a reminder of the strength within Indigenous communities.
“I hope people take away that there is a lot of Indigenous resiliency to celebrate,” she said. “There are many Indigenous artisans and surrounding communities to support.”
Students who attended say the event provides a meaningful opportunity to connect despite busy schedules.
“It’s really hard for us to find time to connect,” said Madison, a Mohawk student from Six Nations of the Grand River. “Having time to come together reminds us that we’re not alone navigating school.”
The gathering also featured energetic performances.
“It’s a really fast and energetic dance… I try to get the crowd excited,” said DJ White, a Men’s Fancy Feather dancer.
Organizers say the event continues to promote cultural awareness, unity, and support across the campus.
