Fanshawe College and WeRise, a London-based non-profit community initiative, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the future of 106.9 The X.
CIXX-FM, also known as 106.9 The X, was launched in 1978 and was the first licensed campus radio station in Canada dedicated to teaching students from the broadcast radio and journalism programs.
The station’s future was called into question to staying on the air when the college announced a permanent suspension to the Broadcasting – Radio and Media Production program.
Fanshawe was looking for community support from November 2025 to keep the campus radio station open.
A joint release from the college and WeRise stated they committed to “a collaborative process to assess feasibility, guided by shared commitments to community service, public-interest broadcasting, cultural safety, equity and inclusion, and continued student learning opportunities.”
The statement continued that “WeRise will seek funding to lead a comprehensive feasibility study, with findings informing any future governance or operational decisions.”
Fanshawe says it will make every effort to keep 106.9 the X on the air during this period.
