The start of a new school year can bring excitement for college students, but adjusting to new schedules, academic expectations and social environments can also contribute to increased mental-health issues. For students at Fanshawe College, the first few weeks of the semester can be a significant adjustment, particularly for first years.
We spoke with first-year Fanshawe College student Madison Chrisjohn and Administrator Coordinator Seth Marcaccio to learn how the start of the school year has been going and what mental-health resources are available to students.

Madison says “Making a schedule and planning everything out” helps her stay organized and able to handle her stress-levels.
The transition can contribute to the feeling of stress and anxiety, making access to mental-health resources an important part of student support. Fanshawe offers mental-health and wellness services for students such as counselling, appointments, peer support, groups, workshops, a fitness centre, and community resources.
Administrator Coordinator Seth Marcaccio says that “At the start of the year everyone’s feeling a little overwhelmed. Especially with new students.”
The first week back can set the tone for the rest of the semester, but students are not expected to have everything figured out immediately. As classes get underway, knowing what resources are available can help students manage the pressures of college while maintaining their mental-health. For students who are struggling, reaching out for support can be an important first step.
