For centuries, women have been fighting for more representation and equality in society. Now with Kamala Harris being the first woman elected as US Vice-President, this may change the way society views on female empowerment.
“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last—because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,” Harris said in a tweet, inspiring many young women and girls even beyond the United States.
Aside from Kamala Harris, there are many strong women all over the world working in government, owning their own companies, or even having their own families. Changing the way women are viewed in society, causing the future to look bright for young girls.
Kate Young is the Member of Parliament for London West and also the Parliamentary Secretary for Southern Ontario. Being 65 years old now, starting off her journalism career in the 70s was not an easy ride. Young started off as a student at Fanshawe College and then became the first female news anchor for CFPL TV (CTV affiliate now).
“When the person doing the six o’clock news announced he was leaving. I thought to myself that would be a wonderful job, but I just knew that they’d never hire a woman,” she says.
After building the courage to apply for the job, she ended up getting hired with a male co-anchor. She says after she was hired, she saw many more women start to get hired in newsrooms. This is a great improvement to see happen for women in male dominated jobs, but today we’re still seeing the same challenges in other workplaces.
“My daughter is 32 and she’s having to deal with some of the issues that I dealt with. And I’m disappointed that that’s happened that way, but it has, and you can never stop trying,” says Young, hopeful that things will improve in the near future.
