The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a life of its own over the past few months. With multiple lockdown’s due to millions of cases worldwide, It almost felt like life was being put on pause. Since the virus first became prominent in March of 2020, there have been over 1.5 million reported COVID related deaths in the world. 8 months later, in December, people around the world were taking the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The new vaccines developed by two leading medical companies have brought plenty of discussion. With the speed in which the vaccines were developed people are becoming increasingly skeptical about taking the vaccine. With long term side effects unknown, it has made vaccination a trending topic throughout the entire world.
Some places were able to eradicate all active cases of the virus before the vaccine was available through strict mass lockdowns. Wuhan china and Australia have reported zero active cases in their respective communities. Rex Baker, a local pharmacist feels as though the vaccine would be more effective than a lockdown in our community.
“The vaccine will actually immunize people from coronavirus. Where as a lockdown we can tell people to stop home and close down businesses but that wont stop people from going to their neighbors house, or their friends house. Attending a party, or those sort of things.”
Living in the age of social media, things on the internet travel fast. Since the vaccine has been put in place there have been plenty of skeptics. You can find negative viral memes and jokes about the vaccine on anything from Facebook, to Snapchat. What is really in question is how serious people are about what is going around on the internet.
Mike Sneddon is a health sciences student and he feels as though regardless of what is on the internet people will still make their own vaccination decisions. Including himself.
“I have my beliefs on the vaccine and people online can believe whatever they want. I know that there is a lot of negative outlook on it but I don’t think that its had an impact on what I believe to be going on with the vaccine. Whether it’s ready to be implemented on the public or not, the jokes don’t really bother me at all.”
With the vaccine being developed at record speeds it begs the question is it ready, or is technology and science far more developed than during recent pandemics? At the end of the day, there will always be plenty of debate about vaccination. What you do is up to you. Just make sure to keep your health and wellbeing in your best interest.
