Canadian winters are harsh, unforgiving and cold, and the best way to stay comfortable during the many months of snow, wind and slush, is to buy a durable set of outerwear to keep the cold outside of your body and the heat in, and the best part is that there are so many different options for outerwear that is both fashionable and functional.
Alex Vanderkam is the president of the Thames Valley Trails Association, and being a hiker himself, he had some tips on what sorts of things you’ll need.
“A good pair of boots is key, Sorels, Columbia, Keen, Timberland, Solomon, The North Face, and even more manufacturers make great gear for winter. You need something waterproof for sure”
What about the style side of things? How can one look good when they want to stay warm?
There are so many choices for stylish coats, for example, military surplus – These coats are built for function and provide a sleek vintage look. Another good choice is a puffer jacket. Do your research before buying any old jacket though, as some brands can be cruel in the production of the garment.
All it takes is a bit of searching, a little bit of research goes a long way when it comes to buying outdoor gear that will last you more than a few years.
Sol Thompson is one of the hosts of the fashion podcast, Pair of Kings, and he explained how he finds his outerwear.
“All it takes is some searching, take two hours one day to search eBay or something and find a piece you like, I found my World War II air force jacket on there and I’ve had it for 3 years now.”
Wintertime can be a difficult season to look good in, but it’s not impossible, so get out there and find some pieces that work for you this season.
