The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding the public to protect themselves against mosquitoes, after they said a dead crow found in London has tested positive for West Nile Virus.
They suggest using insect repellent containing DEET, and wearing light colored clothing with long-sleeves, socks, and pants in areas filled with mosquitoes, especially at dusk and dawn; Mosquitoes are the most active during those times.
West Nile Virus prevention can also be done in your home. The Health Unit suggested to repair your door, window, and screen holes, dispose standing water from various items found in your yard and h0me: wheelbarrows, toys, pool covers, tires, saucers, flowerpots, and garbage cans.
Additionally, the MLHU said to clean clogged eaves troughs, change water in bird baths every other day, aerate ponds or fill them with fish, and cover rain barrel openings.
The MLHU Vector-Borne Disease team supervises about 230 standing water sites on public property, testing for West Nile Virus.
