With the news that students won’t be going back to school for the foreseeable future when the spring break ends, teachers and students alike are scrambling to adjust. The students at BealArt were in the process of working on a community art mural that has already faced numerous delays due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But one student isn’t going to let the pandemic slow her down and put her out of work. Elizabeth Buragina is a student in the BealArt program, who has taken to doing at home art projects which she says keep her skills sharp, while also giving her a creative outlet to freely express herself. Among other projects, Buragina is working on a flower watering globe, pinch pots and custom painted shoes.
“I was working on the community mural and a bust when I was in class, so I want to do something where I can continue to sharpen my painting skills and my sculpting skills.”
“This pinch pot is in the beginning stages, it needs to be dried over 24-48 hours, then you put Mod Podge on it to make it food-safe and dishwasher-safe, then paint it.”
Currently, Buragina just makes art projects for herself and her friends but says that she would consider selling it in the future if people were interested. She says that most of the work she does currently is just for fun and to keep her skills sharp.
“It’s a good way to express yourself. Plus it’s a good way to keep you busy.”
Buragina encourages others to try making something, even if they don’t have prior experience.
“The best part is anyone can do it. Like, even if you are new to it you can just pick up a brush and start painting. It can be pretty rewarding.”
