Starting this week, Ontarians who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 can now download an individualized QR code which allows users to quickly provide proof of vaccination. This is in comparison to how quickly it would take one to pull up a dose administration receipt.
The updated certificate program was initially available on Friday, through the province’s official COVID-19 website but only for Ontarians born between January and April. This is changing progressively each day with all Ontarians being able to officially download the new certificates starting Monday. Businesses will also be able to download an app released by the Ontario government that allows the custom QR codes to become readable.
The QR code covers your current vaccination status, your legal name and date of birth. A valid piece of government issued identification is still required to be checked against. Businesses and organizations will accept the old fashioned way of doing things, if you’d prefer not to download the new QR code certificate system.
Expect a wide launch of similar apps across other Canadian provinces, as this is looking to be the new normal of sorts. The government is currently looking at ways to further expand the certificate system, including incorporating the certificate into android and apple wallet. As of right now those in the app can choose to save the QR code as a photo of a PDF.
