Black ice, slush, snow and mud. Those are only some of the conditions to expect in the coming months as winter comes up the driveway. With the upcoming season, comes preparations to ensure that your vehicle is road safe and capable to handle Canada’s well known winters.
Goran Melkic owns an auto body shop in St. Thomas and he says that ensuring that your car is safe for winter is detrimental for safety. Making sure that your vehicle is road safe comes with a certain checklist, Winter tires are almost a must in South-Western Ontario. Along with the tires comes a brake check up to ensure they are strong enough and quality enough to handle the snow and slippery roads. Those few things are just a few off of the extensive checklist making sure that you are well situated for Ontario’s winters. “It’s good to have an extra blanket, to make sure your phone is there charged, always have a charger in case you go off the road, a jack for your tire if it blows or something so you can jack it up yourself. It’s good to have a little bit of food or something and an extra bottle of water” Those are some of the things that Melkic says are good to keep in your car incase of an accident or any situation.
While most drivers will consider themselves good drivers year round. Although with those drivers on the roads, the conditions still over power their driving skill. Which unfortunately leads to accidents with other drivers, ending up in a ditch or collisions with animals. “What we mostly see in winter time are, deer collisions and also black ice collisions. Very dangerous. Lots of those lots of vehicles write offs due to the damage.” Melkic responded when asked about what he sees driven into his shop in the winter time.
