A picture is worth a thousand words, so they say. Perhaps that cliché is a bit hyperbolic, but phrases turn into clichés for a reason. They all start out as original ideas that become so popular, they eventually lose their meaning. However in this case, I think it sums up what photography is all about and why it is so important.
Matt Hiscox is a local photographer who shines brightest at Budweiser Gardens taking photos for the London Knights. He gives his take on whether he believes the cliché is true.
“It is,” said Hiscox. “I’m an emotional photographer. You look at all my Knights photos, there’s some type of emotion in that image. The look on your face tells everything. Everyone can relate to that look on your face.”
What this all means is that photography is about representation. A skilled photographer will capture a picture that represents exactly what it needs to, and you can understand it without even requiring an explanation. Fanshawe’s program coordinator of photography Gilles Sweet-Boulay gives his take on photo representation.
“There’s so many questions you can ask when looking at a photograph. A photograph is full of information,” said Sweet-Boulay.
He then gave an interesting example of what a photo can represent.
“It’s not just a toaster on a table. Somebody spent a lot of time thinking about the props in the background because now it’s a toaster in a really classy kitchen. So buying this toaster is meant for people who have good taste. A toaster doesn’t just brown your bread. It’s something that is a decor or in your kitchen. It’s another one of your beautiful things that you’re going to have in your home because you’re that kind of customer and that’s who you are.”
Sweet-Boulay was in agreement that the number one thing photos are meant for are the memories. Looking back on old photos will always be something humans enjoy doing. Hiscox believes that it’s very important.
“You’re able to relive emotions. That’s why we all take photos on our phones,” said Hiscox. “You can see them, enjoy them and re-live the emotion and energy you felt that day.”
Photography is timeless. We will forever need it for advertising and representation and most importantly for our memories. Whether it’s on a phone or a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR), photography is immensely important.
