The fatal hit-and-run that killed the Afzaal family has been moved to a higher court.
The attack, which took place in June 2021, was deemed a hate crime by police.
The target of the attack was the five members of the Afzaal-Salman, Salman Afzaal, 46, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna, her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal, and the couple’s nine-year-old son Fayez. The family was out for a walk in the Hyde Park neighbourhood, when they were struck by a pickup truck.
All were killed in the attack, while Fayez was left seriously injured but survived.
Nathaniel Veltman, 20, of London, appeared in court virtually on Wednesday morning from the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre. Veltman faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
The appearance was to announce that the case has been moved up to the Superior Court of Justice through a preferred indictment.
The procedure allows the Crown to apply to the provincial attorney-general for consent to move the case to the higher court without a preliminary hearing.
A judicial pretrial has been scheduled for March 8 and Veltman returns to the Superior Court on April 12.
