Green Party Leader Michael Schreiner pledged free tuition for 60K students over 4 years with an emphasis on the trades, and guaranteed employment after graduation in London, Ontario on Friday.
The stipulation is that it’s only for 1 year of tuition, 1 year of employment and only in specific green jobs.
Schreiner also mentioned it would be focused primarily on educating and employing women, Indigenous people, and racialized communities.
When asked about how he plans to fund this endeavor, he spoke about his party’s commitment to investing in green technology. Schneider spoke about allocating $5 billion into green tech and to create a $4 billion green bond specifically for entrepreneurs and startups in the green sector.
“It’s really having government there, as a partner with the private sector to create these new career and job opportunities for people and to help these business scale so they can create more jobs and more prosperity for our communities,” says Schreiner.
The demand for green jobs has increased by 38.5% globally over the past 7 years and Schreiner sees Ontario as a potential global leader.
The provincial election is on June 2.
