The Western Mustangs men’s soccer team has a chance at revenge when they host the Windsor Lancers on Friday night.
Windsor owned the Mustangs last year, beating them twice and knocking them out of the playoffs.
Now the tables have turned as Western opens its Homecoming Weekend sitting third in the OUA West, well above the sixth-place Lancers.
“Our team is totally different this year,” says Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. “We’ve got lots of depth from front to back, and I think it’s going to be a really good game for us.”
Western will be looking to rebound from a pair of losses last weekend to York and Guelph, and the men’s team will be eager to get back a number of its starters who also play in the Premier division for London’s Marconi Club.
“With these five players back in the lineup, we’re going to be fairly strong,” Basacco says.
Adding to the incentive to win will be a home crowd filled with Mustangs alumni, as Western honours its 1998 national title-winning men’s soccer team.
“One of our players, [Tom Perks, who played from ’93 to ’97], is being induced into the ‘W’ Club Hall of Fame [too],” says Basacco, “so there’s going to be a good number of alumni that are coming back for that.”
