Sports betting hasn’t been legal for too long in Ontario but it is starting to really flourish in its first year of operation and with the Super Bowl coming up in the next weeks it’s expecting to have another large increase in revenue.
iGaming Ontario released some of its numbers from the past year and in the third tax quarter, it saw a 71 per cent increase in total betting revenue. From the months from Oct 1 to Dec 31, the total igaming revenue was $457 million, which was a $200 million increase compared to the second tax quarter.
On April 4, 2022, Bill C-218 was passed which made single-event sports betting legal in Ontario. Bill C-218 is the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, which will amend the Criminal Code to allow provincial governments to determine when and how to conduct and manage single-event sports betting offerings within their borders.
Dave Briggs the managing editor for PlayCanada is expecting that in the next quarter, the total igaming revenue will see another larger increase, “Super Bowl is the biggest sports-betting event on the calendar and March Madness is pretty close behind it.”
The Super Bowl teams are set and with that, all different kinds of bets will be coming out for it. The Super Bowl is known for having all different kinds of little funky bets like what colour will the Gatorade be, will the national anthem be longer than a certain time, and will the coin toss be heads or tails?
Some interesting prop bets from last year’s Super Bowl were will a player purpose after the game, which media company commercial will air first, what will be mentioned first during the MVP speech, and which crypto company commercial will air first.
“I’m gonna bet on the coin flip and the colour of Gatorade, last year was blue I think and I bet yellow,” said Owen Rahn a Western student.
“This year I think the colour of the Gatorade is gonna be Orange, and it will be tails during the coin flip,” said Ian Glendinning a Fanshawe student.
“It’s definitely gonna be red this year, I don’t really bet on any other sports only on the super bowl,” said Daniel Rudy a Fanshawe Student.
People will have to wait and see now what the outcome of their bets are on Feb 12 when the Philidipha Eagles face off against the Kanas City Cheifs in Super Bowl 57
