With the Grand Theatre’s comeback after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grand’s comeback has never been more apparent.
Londoners recently had the chance to see the Grands’ newest production, as they host BOOM X, a one-man show written, directed, and performed by industry veteran Rick Miller.
Boom X, the second part of a three-part trilogy, looks at the music, film, politics, and culture of the X Generation.
The first part, BOOM, looks at the lives of Miller’s parents, while X looks at his own upbringing.
“If BOOM was the story of my parent’s generation, then BOOM X is the story of my own personal generation,” Miller said.
Dennis Gaurnhum, the Gran’s Artistic Director, went on to sing Miller’s praises.
“Rick Miller is one of Canada’s theatrical geniuses, I would say, he just oozes creativity and is always coming up with new ideas just like BOOM X!” Garnum said.
Miller, who is also a talented impressionist, goes on to do over a hundred different impressions for the show, from Nixon to even Gene Simmions of Kiss fame.
When talking about the nostalgia factor of the show, Miller takes about the very essence of nostalgia itself and how he’s utilized it himself
“The idea of nostalgia is tricky because I think our brain, it’s natural to feel nostalgic, or our brain tends to think, oh, the good old days” Miller continued.
Miller talked about the process of adapting the nostalgia of the X generation while staying true to himself and his own experiences.
“Nostalgia can sometimes divide different generations whether it be older generations perpetuating these generalizations about younger generations’ said Miller.
With Londoners now having had the chance to see the show for themselves, some theatregoers gave their thoughts on the show like Mary Lou.
“Yeah, it was absolutely fantastic, I especially related to all the October Crissi stuff because I lived in Quebec right around then,” said Mary Lou.
There was also Sarah, who had gone to see the show with her friends on a night out on the town.
“It was super nostalgic for me, and it was cool seeing all of those different impressions.
BOOM X will next be headed to Taiwan as its next stop after London, as Miller prepares for the show, even incorporating a Tiwanewse song into his performance.
