The OPP is warning local drivers to stop for school buses with their lights on.
“They’re big, they’re bright, they’re yellow, with flashing amber lights and red lights with a stop arm that comes out, and carry some of our most precious cargo, that’s our kids.” said Sgt. Ed Sanchuk in a video statement posted to X.
Despite constant posts and reminders throughout the last week, the OPP feels that too many cases have been reported of cars passing school buses with the stop arm out.
“We simply can’t have that, we have to make sure that our kids get there safe.” said Acting Staff Sgt. James Morrow sitting alongside Sanchuk.
The OPP is encouraging the public to report these incidents to police with a license plate, vehicle description, and driver description if they can be safely obtained.
The penalty for passing a stopped school bus could be a fine of up to $2000 or six demerit points for first time offenders.
