London Police hosted a press conference today, regarding many shootings and gun related incidents.
After a 48% reduction in shootings last year, London Police said that six shootings took place in the month of August alone, bringing the city’s yearly total up to 16 thus far.
“This kind of violence and total disregard for public safety is a symptom of a larger issue, and that larger issue lies with the criminal justice system.” said Chief Thai Truong.
Truong advocated for bail reform, along with a review of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and harsher sentences for repeat offenders and those convicted of serious violent crimes.
Truong continued by stating “The system is broken, and as your police chief I am telling you, it needs to be fixed right now, and it needs to be fixed urgently.”
After Truong’s statement wrapped up, Detective Sgt. Jon Meinen took the podium, followed by Detective Sgt. Micah Bourdeau, both of which discussed individual cases.
Only 14 incidents were reported in 2024, the lowest number since 2020. With 16 incidents on the year and a few more months to go, London Police has made it clear that they will do everything they can to protect the community, while also remaining transparent about concerns to public safety.
